Understanding moisture content within our slab wood and lumber in very important: Unfortunately, there are many selling slab wood air dried and claiming it is safe to use in your woodworking projects because it has air dried for years. This is false. In order for the water to leave the plant cell, known as the “bound water”, it requires heat, vacuum, or a combination of the two. It is the water that flows around the plant cells, “free water”, that is released during air drying. Moisture will always reenter lumber through humidity “free water” but will not return within the plant cell “bound water” if kiln dried. Without kiln drying , there is also the possibility of harmful pests that reside in wood getting into your shop and home. All the slab wood and lumber MN Woodcraft LLC sells is kiln dried to 6-8% moisture content using vacuum and heat.
